Practice tips:
PRACTICE ON AT LEAST 5 DAYS OF THE WEEK:
THE MORE YOU PLAY, THE more progress you will make

Here are some practice strategies to help you when you play at home and to help make your music sound it's best.  Use what works best for you:

  1. Sing the note names and solfege.  (Don't remember or having difficulty?  Check out the note reading level 1 quiz below.)
  2. Sing and finger the note names.
  3. Clap and say the rhythm.
  4. Don't know a note?  Look it up in the back of your book!
  5. Pick one note to play your rhythms on.  When you're ready, add the real notes back in.  Review as necessary
  6. Break your music into small chunks.  If one measure is too tough, play a few notes at a time.
  7. Play the checkpoints (first note in each measure).  Each time you go back, add another note.  If you run into trouble, go back to the previous note, then add it back in.
  8. Slow the tempo down at first, then challenge yourself by playing it a little faster and smoother each time.  Use a metronome!
  9. Set goals for yourself.  What do you want to be able to do when you finish practicing on a given day?  Remember, they can be small and it might take a few days or weeks to really perfect a section of music.  It's worth it!
